To extend the useful life of our landfills and facilitate the more effective use of plastics as a recyclable resource, Nakano City is significantly changing the way combustible and noncombustible garbage is sorted.
Note: Garbage sorting procedural changes apply to Nakano 1- to 3-chome (excluding locations where daily collections are made), Arai 1- to 4-chome, Eharacho 1- to 3-chome, and Egota 1- to 3-chome. These changes will affect the number of times that (3) ceramics, glass, and metals and (4) PET bottles will be collected.
The Following Rules Will Apply throughout Nakano City as of October 2008. |
Plastic containers and packaging, such as food trays and cups, will be collected and recycled. |
Empty and rinse containers and put them in plastic bags before placing them in your recycling bin. Items that cannot be cleaned out should be thrown away as combustible garbage. New collection days are being established. (These items are already being collected in some areas.)。 |
| |

|
|
Non-container plastics, such as toys and videotapes, and rubber and leather products will be treated as combustible garbage. |
Dispose of these items along with kitchen scraps on the same day that combustible garbage is collected.
|
| |

|
|
Ceramics (such as rice bowls), glassware (such as drinking glasses), and metal items (such as cooking pots) will be treated as a separate category of garbage, i.e., ceramics, glass, and metals. These will be collected once every two weeks. |
Try to eliminate these as much as possible.
|
| |

|
|
Plastic PET bottles will be collected at bottle and can collection stations. |
You will be able to dispose of PET bottles on the weekly bottle and can collection day. PET bottle collection nets will be placed next to bottle and can collection cases. |

02 Be Prepared for Earthquakes: Protect Yourself, Protect Your Community
In May of this year, a magnitude 8.0 inland earthquake struck Sichuan Province in China, claiming more than 60,000 lives (according to the State Seismological Bureau of China). Japan is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries, and an inland earthquake is predicted to strike the Tokyo area at some point in the future. Earthquakes will not wait. To reduce damage in the future, we have to take steps now.
- Disaster Drills to Be Held in Showa, Higashi-Nakano, and Kami-Saginomiya on August 31 (Sun.)

Ex: - Install furniture restraints
- Seismically reinforce your home
- Prepare emergency food and water (be sure to check expiration dates)
Discuss Evacuation Procedures with Your Family.
The city has designated 50 facilities that will serve as shelters, such as elementary and junior high schools, as well as centers for relief and rescue activities during an emergency. Shelters are places where victims can gather; first aid will be administered to the injured; and supplies, water, and food will be provided to victims.
If spreading fires or other circumstances make it dangerous to be in a particular area, city officials and police officers will redirect residents to evacuation sites.
Shelter maps and Disaster Prevention in Nakano City brochures containing detailed information on how to prepare for an emergency are available in Japanese, English, Chinese, and Korean. To obtain these materials, contact the Disaster & Emergency Affairs Desk or your nearest community center.
