Public Transportation

  1. JR: The minimum fare for JR is 130yen, except for some sections. All stations have ticket vending machines. When you need to pay an additional fare, you can either use the fare-adjustment machine near the exit or pay the additional fare to the station employee at the ticket gate.
If you purchase and use a rechargeable Suica card (2,000yen per card, including a 500yen deposit), the fare is automatically deducted when you pass through the automated ticket gate. The Suica card can be used for JR lines and almost all other train lines as well as bus lines.
Also, coupon tickets (11 tickets for the price of 10) as well as commuter passes are available.
  2. Private Railways and Subways: The minimum fare depends on the train line. In addition, there are PASMO cards (1,000yen per card, including a 500yen deposit), which are similar to JR's Suica cards.
  3. Bus: Except for Keio Teito Bus (200yen), the fare for most buses within Tokyo is 210yen. The late-night bus fare is about double that amount. Although you can use Suica and PASMO on most buses, there are other prepaid cards that offer discounts.
  4. Taxi: Usually, the fare for the first 2 km is 660yen for medium-sized taxis and 640yen for compact taxis. After the first 2 km, the fare will increase according to the distance traveled. After 11 p.m., there will be a 20% late-night surcharge.
Please note that the rear passenger-side door opens automatically.
