Japanese School System

Schools in Japan include six years of elementary school, three years of junior high school, three years of high school and four years of university. Elementary school and junior high school are compulsory. Foreign residents may also attend school if they so wish.

Subsidies for School Expenses for Children Attending International or Their Own National School

Nakano City offers subsidies for foreign parents of children who attend international or their own national school to ease the burden of tuition fees. Please call the coordinating section for more information.

  • Those Who Can Receive Subsidies (Those Who Fulfill All of the Following):
    • Those living in Nakano City who have completed foreign resident registration.
    • Parents of school children or students attending an authorized international school.
      (In Japan, "school children" and "students" refer to children attending elementary school or junior high school.)
    • Parents who are paying tuition for their school children or students.
  • Subsidy Amount: 8,000yen per month per school child or student
  • Issuance Period: End of October for the 1st semester (April through September) and end of April for the 2nd semester (October through March)
  • Application Procedures and Deadline: Please submit the Subsidies Application Form sent to the school that your child attends no later than the end of September. (As a rule, by mail.)
  • *Please call the desk if you have moved into or move out from Nakano City in the middle of the fiscal year.
  • *Be sure to complete the application within the fiscal year.
